80-20

It's so true when they say success is 20% hard work and 80% luck.

Turns out that even if you work hard and get good results, the chances of getting a well paying job is only 20%.

Seeing that most of my friends have already secured some good paying jobs with average results makes me question the effort and the extra courses that I have endured for so long. And the amount of job experience that I have accumulated just to get a good career. Or maybe I just don't have that 80%.

I just can't get over the setback of being rejected for the job that I really wanted. Some part of me is still hoping that they would send an email to me saying the position is now available. Well perhaps it's the stress that it's exam time now and I still have not secured a job yet while many have already locked into high paying jobs.
Most of my bank applications have no replies too.

I wonder if I should start to panic.

Patience my young Jedi.
Edited: I changed the ratio from 70-30 to 80-20.

last lecture

I'm bored out of my skin.

So Friday after coming out of the fluids lecture it dawned on me that its the last lecture that I was gonna attend in NTU. That's if I am not gonna further my studies.

So exams in 1 weeks time, this time I only have 4 papers in 3 weeks so its less taxing on studying and thus I am bored.

and I keep sleeping I think it so unhealthy for my body clock.

when am i ever going to be employed?

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for making your time for the interview.
We have given it a careful review.

However, we are sorry that we cannot offer you the position at this time.

We wish you every success in your job search.

Rejection is the worst feeling ever. The sight of this email is so devastating.

So the story goes like this:

I applied for a job at Mitsubishi Chemicals from a brochure during the career fair, because it was related to what I was doing in Exxon and I wanna do something I'm familiar with. I got an email and a call for an interview.

It was my first job interview since I started applying for jobs so i was rather excited. I had all my answers well prepared beforehand and I did very well in the first interview with 3 Japanese managers. What surprised me halfway was the fact that it was a position in Japan and they were going to send me to Japan to work in the event I was hired. And I only got to know this during the interview, so I suppressed the 0_0 within me and went through the rest of the interview pretty well. The managers were very happy with my response and I was called for an expected second interview.

Seconds after the interview I was still in culture shock and started a brain hurricane with the idea of working in Japan. There are too many considerations, like my university fees, radiations and earthquake, living expenses etc, although the visions of working in Tokyo tingles my excitement nerve. Ramen, sushi, seasons, learning Japanese for free. An opportunity of a life-time, really. I just had to leave my home and everything for 5 years. A tad too long huh.

The second one came a week after, I didn't expect anything because they have already asked everything they need to in the first one. I would have thought it was about my qualifications and expected salary, but it was with 2 other different managers which I think was more senior management and the same HR manager (who remembers me quite well from the 'how i learnt japanese' answer)

The same question were repeated, but I didn't answer them as well as I did because I see no point in repeating what I have said in the first. Then a series of weird questions came, some were really challenging and not expected of an engineeering company. I stumbled a few, but did okay. Overall I didn't impress them as well as the previous interviewers because they were very serious.

That email was just sent to me on Good Friday. Sighs, whats good about that.

well I think the main reason was that I was a mechanical engineer applying for a sales and marketing job, which I think by Japanese culture is inappropriate (they were quite shocked when i said i wanted to do sales and marketing) because they would expect you to do what you have excelled in school, like mechanical engineering and be an expert in your own field.
But I really wanted to do S&M because I have the experience and qualifications. Or maybe I was too complacent about the smooth first interview that I had lowered the reaction mechanism in my mind.

Oh wells, at least I have kept this known to minimal individuals, there's no need to announce anything. Japan doesn't need me. For now.

Lessons learnt:
- Always emphasize and sell your strong points like experiences and qualifications
- Don't hold too high an expectation
- Never underestimate the interviewing questions. Always prepare for everything.

Jcube

What used to be RV's favourite haunt in the 2000s was broken down from JEC and reconstructed into the new JCube, the hippest shopping center of the west!

A brand new Shaw theatre, a brand new ice skating rink, brand new shops, JCube is the real deal. After browsing through lunch menus in Itacho, Watami, Canton Paradise, Manna Korean, Chilli's was the best choice.

The lunch sets at Chilli's were relatively cheap with a side, a main and free flow soft drink and the food is really quite good and authentic american.

Some of the retail shops are still under construction so I guess we'll just have to wait for a few more weeks for the whole Jcube to open completely. I wanna get a sniff of the new leather seats in the cinema.

Oh and there's KOI ouside Jcube. Residents at JE are so happy.

Jurong East is slowly becoming the Orchard and CBD of the west. In a few years time JEM will be done, the new shopping center will contain Uniqlo, H&M, Topshop etc, Jurong East will become the Orchard Road of the west.

Sighs, why not CCK.

After Quiz

After quiz week (fluids and building services) I got out of the house and went on a series of relaxing walkabouts to fight the stresses accumulated.

1. Lights at MBS

After Thai food, ice cream and cakes, the night is still young in the city but the lights were out due to Earth Hour. Lucky for that, we caught the show at 9.30pm and viewed some exhibits. MBS is a really cool place to hang out at night.

2. Shopping at Orchard

Orchard used to be my second home until university so I would feel uneasy and outdated if I don't chill there at least once a month. So walked around there, looking for things to buy like shorts to prepare for the summer, suits to prepare for work, new working clothes and keep an eye open for some seasonal clothes. Unexpectedly Uniqlo had sale and I bought a work shirt for half the price.

3. Ben&Jerry's Free Cone Day

Done with my lab results, took a bus ride to Bird Park for one of the shortest queue for Free Cone Day. Its a record - I had Spice Chocolate, Clusterfluff, Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Berry Sorbet and brought 2 pints back. FOR FREE!! HEE HEE.

4. Library

YES!!! The influx of new comics gets my nerves tingled and my eyes so ever bright. Green Lantern, Flashpoint, Batman, Spiderman. NLB is doing a really good job keeping date with the books. WOOHOO!!
